TIF SIGFRIDS is excited to present our first solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Roy Dowell. The exhibition will open on Saturday, March 26th with a reception from 4 – 6 PM.

Dowell is presenting for the first time a series of five mosaics based on his collage work, a familiar aspect of his practice for over 30 years. In these collages, he draws from a variety of sources, often times espied and/or collected on his frequent travels to Mexico and elsewhere, and carefully pieces together an amalgamation of painterly brushstrokes and materials to contend with pictorial space creating images of diverse parts and references.

In this new body of work, Dowell takes a more collaborative approach and infers new meaning from our understanding of the word collage, here suggesting that it might extend beyond the physical realm and into the personal. The mosaics in this new body of work are all representations of his collages, envisioned on a larger scale and made in collaboration with trained artisans interpreting and transforming Dowell's paper into glass. In this almost alchemical exchange, absorption is now replaced with reflection and light.

A new vernacular emerges and all that is recognizable in Dowell’s earlier bodies of work can be re-understood through this new medium and convergence of viewpoints. The glass mosaic unit transmits and radiates the inherently personal out into the world.

Roy Dowell (b. 1951 in New York) lives and works in Los Angeles and was featured in the 2012 “Made in L.A.”biennial curated by the Hammer Museum and LAXART. An early student of CalArts, Dowell in 1989 founded the OTIS Graduate Fine Arts Program and still serves as its Chair. His work is in the permanent collections of LACMA,MOCA (Los Angeles), The Hammer Museum, SF MOMA, The Oakland and Berkley Museum, MCA San Diego, theJumex Collection, and many other significant institutional and private collections. Exhibition history includes:LACMA, Hammer Museum, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Aspen Art Museum, and The Drawing Center. Reviews of Dowell’s work have been published in Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Art & Auction, The Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times.
